Swanny had two spells with the Clarets, we signed him from Plymouth, sold him to Stan at Bury before Stan brought him back shortly after taking over as Burnley manager. He made just 68 league appearances for us, with injury cruelly restricting him during his second spell and shortly after leaving for York he had to call it a day.

By the time he joined us in the summer of 1995, as a replacement for the departed Steve Davis, he had settled into a role in the centre of defence, and that’s where he played his football for us on both occasions he was with the club.

Before Plymouth he had played for Leeds, Hull and Port Vale and much of his time at Boothferry Park was spent playing up front and alongside Andy Payton, and he scored 24 goals in 80 league appearances for them.

Swanny made over 400 league appearances in total and during his career he was sold for transfer fees totalling over a million, both us and Hull paid £200,000 for his services whilst his moves to Port Vale and Plymouth cost £300,000 each.

He was a popular player with the Clarets, certainly in his first couple of years and also captained the side on many occasions.
