First Turf Moor league game for referee Marriner since 2006

In the 2009/10 season he was the only Premier League referee not to take charge of a Burnley game but he would have done so had the home fixture against Stoke, when Steve Davis was in caretaker charge, not been postponed due to safety issues outside the ground.

Despite being a Football League referee since a Football League referee since the start of the 2002/03 season he's refereed us only three times. The first of them was the 2005/06 1-1 home draw against Southampton whilst his last Burnley league game was the 3-0 drubbing against Blackpool on New Year's Day 2008.

At the end of 2008 he was back at Turf Moor for the Carling Cup quarter-final win against Arsenal courtesy of two Kevin McDonald goals. Since then, somehow, we've been kept apart from Marriner who is based in Sheldon in the West Midlands.

After just over two years in the Football League he was promoted to the select group and his first game in the top flight came at the Valley in November 2004, a 4-0 win for Charlton against Norwich.

He had a reputation for over use of his red cards then but they were all contained within his Football League games until February 2006 when he reduced Manchester City to ten men at Everton. The home side won 1-0 with a David Weir goal; the player sent off was Stephen Jordan.

Last season he was busy with his red card. No fewer than 13 players were sent off in his 36 games including three in one game between Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

Most of his games remained in the Premier League but this season that's changed. None of his first five games were in the Premier League with four in the Championship and one Capital One Cup tie.

In one of those games he sent off Bournemouth's Yann Kermogant at Bolton, a decision that left player and Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe in a rage. Kermogant later admitted the offence was probably worth a one match ban and not the three he received.

He was given his first Premier League game of the season last Saturday and he presided over Southampton's 8-0 win against Sunderland which saw four players yellow carded; they were Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton) and Lee Cattermole, Connor Wickham and Liam Bridcutt (all Sunderland).

They are amongst a total of 19 yellow cards in his six games of which eight have gone to home players and eleven to away players.

Andre Marriner is currently third in the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of 84.54 from two qualifying games.

The assistant referees are Scott Ledger (South Yorkshire) and Simon Long (Cornwall). The fourth official is Michael Oliver (Northumberland) who refereed our opening game of the season against Chelsea.
