Ex-Clarets Caldwell and Reeves on the move

Two months ago Caldwell, who was still under contract at Birmingham, moved to Canada and joined Toronto FC on loan where he went straight into a the first team.

He joined a squad that includes some familiar faces from English football including Richard Eckersley, a Burnley team mate of the 2009/10 season. Others at Toronto who have played in English football included Bobby Convey, Robert Earnshaw, Darren O'Dea and Darel Russell.

Having played six games for the MLS Club, scoring one goal, he has, this week, extended his stay by signing a two year contract which will see him play out this and the next two seasons.

They've landed themselves a very good and influential player who I still believe left Burnley too early when he was released in the summer of 2010.

The club president and general manager Kevin Payne said after the move had been completed: "Steven has done a great job in anchoring our defense since arriving on loan, and he's been a terrific influence in the locker room. We're very pleased that he'll be with us for this and the next two seasons.

Referring to his time at Sunderland and Burnley, when he captained teams to promotion to the Premier League, Caldwell said: "I had other options back home, but I've been there and done it in the Championship. I've experienced success there and I loved it and it was fantastic. But this is a different challenge and I have enjoyed the standard of the football.

"I still feel like I have got a lot of football left in me. I feel really good physically and mentally. Hopefully I can be a success in the years that I am here and possibly longer."

Back in England, Kevin Reeves has made a return to the top flight of English football as part of the new backroom team put together by new Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

Reeves worked with Martinez at both Swansea, where he first went with Brian Flynn in 2002, and Wigan. This week there was an exodus of staff from Everton to Man United, including that of goalkeeping coach Chris Woods, with Martinez returning to Wigan to fill the vacancies.

Reeves was influential in the signings of James McCarthy, James McArthur and Arouna Kone for Wigan and, as Everton's new chief scout, will carry out a similar role for the Goodison Park club.
