Eltringham is the whistle man at Boro

Last updated : 15 December 2015 By Tony Scholes

He's not been a regular with Burnley games and tonight will be just his fifth and his first Burnley league game since October 2012 when he refereed our home game against Leeds, Sean Dyche's second game in charge of the Clarets.

Prior to that, he'd twice refereed us against Leicester and it was the second of them when he had a very poor game. There has, to be fair, been an improvement since.

He became a Football League referee ahead of the 2009/10 season, kicking off in League Two at Morecambe for a 2-2 draw against Hereford. There were two yellow cards in that game and it was his fourth game at Port Vale when he showed a red card for the first time, dismissing Grimsby's Danny Boshell.

He refereed one Championship game that season and five years on it is more usual to find him in the two lower divisions although tonight's game will be his fourth successive Championship game.

He's not particularly over busy with his cards. He did hand out seven yellows in one game this season but has also had four card free games. His total number is 41 yellows and three reds in 19 games.

Of those yellow cards, 14 have gone to home team players and 27 to away team players. All of the red cards have come in the Championship. Back in September he sent off Brentford's James Tarkowski and Jeremy Helan of Sheffield Wednesday as Wednesday won 2-1 at Griffin Park, and more recently he dismissed Bristol City's Nathan Baker in their 2-0 home defeat against Blackburn.

A warning for Burnley; Baker is the only home player carded in his last 17 cards.

His last game was Preston's 1-0 home win against Reading three days ago. The players yellow carded in that game were Garath McCleary, Paul McShane and Matej Vydra, all Reading.

Geoff Eltringham is currently 59th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 49.24 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Shaun Hudson (Tyne & Wear) and Barry Gordon (County Durham). The fourth official is Football League referee Nigel Miller  (County Durham). Miller was the fourth official on the last occasion Eltringham refereed us but hasn't refereed a Burnley game himself since the 1-1 home draw against Nottingham Forest in April 2013.
