It's over a year now since Jay ruptured is anterior cruciate ligament and he's still to make a comeback although has, in the last few days, returned to full training with the South coast club.

During his time out of the game there has been a lot of speculation over his future with Spurs, Liverpool and Man City all linked with him amongst suggestions of a £20 million fee.

But Jay has put all that to bed today and signed a new four year contract with Southampton, replacing the initial contract which had just one year to run.

Jay said: "I'm delighted. It's a great club and we've done amazingly this year. It's been a tough year for myself being out, but I'm really delighted to sign the contract. It's now about looking forward to the future.

Jay Rod left Burnley in June 2012, signing a four year deal with the Saints that would have expired in a year's time. He'd just enjoyed two years as a regular first team player with Burnley and had scored 41 goals in 128 league and cup appearances.

Things might be on the up for Jay but they aren't for three of his former Turf Moor team mates who have all been released by their clubs.

Chris Eagles has left Charlton. He signed for them in February but struggled to make an impact with ten of his fifteen appearances coming via the bench. He scored twice, both in 3-0 away wins at Wigan and Blackpool where he'd also played earlier in the season.

Wes Fletcher has left York after two difficult seasons battling against injury. Whilst former Burnley loan player Keith Lowe was winning their player of the season award, Wes was only able to start around half of their games and leaves having scored 20 goals for them in two seasons which have seen him make 68 appearances.

Finally, Martin Paterson has been released by Huddersfield for whom his last league goals came against Burnley  on New Year's Day 2014. He subsequently had unsuccessful loans with Bristol City and Fleetwood before moving on loan again to Orlando City during the January transfer window.

However, he is still to make his debut for the MLS club managed by Adrian Heath because of a hamstring injury. His loan will continue until the end of June when his contract with Huddersfield ends. Heath said he is getting closer to making his debut with a decision to be made come July as to his future.
