Clarets continue to gather Moss

Last updated : 01 May 2015 By Tony Scholes

Our away games against West Brom and QPR were followed by the home game against Swansea nine weeks ago and now Moss, Sunderland born but now from Horsforth in West Yorkshire, will add tomorrow's game at West Ham to the games he's refereed Burnley.

He's been refereeing for some time, taking up the whistle as part of his academic studies at school, and he joined the Football League in 2005 before reaching the Premier League in 2011.

His first Burnley game was our 2-0 home win against Blackpool in the 2008/09 season, but it is in some away games where we saw him at his worst; his performances at Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest being very poor.

But it was Moss who missed the penalty in the home game against Swansea when Sam Vokes was pulled down in the box, the decision that Ruud Gullit suggested on Match of the Day he didn't give because Vokes didn't go down.

He's referee only one Football League game this season, that between Forest and Middlesbrough, last month with the rest of his 32 games in the Premier League or cup ties.

In those 32 games he's handed out 114 yellow cards and eight red cards. I think the yellow cards give some indication as to what kind of referee he is, 38 of them have gone to home team players with 76, twice as many, to away team players.

The only player he's sent off since his last Burnley game is Tom Huddlestone in Hull's 0-0 draw at Leicester. And there were four yellow cards in his last game, Southampton's 2-2 home draw against Spurs last weekend. Southampton's Steve Davis was carded as were Jan Vertonghen, Federico Fazio and Ben Davies of Spurs.

Jon Moss, prior to his last game, was next to bottom in RATE THE REF with a rating of just 56.81 out of 100, with the lowest rating of 15.71 out of 25 for fitness and positioning.

The assistant referees are Simon Bennett (Staffordshire) and Eddie Smart (West Midlands). The fourth official is Kevin Friend (Leicestershire) whose last Burnley game was our 3-1 defeat against Man United at Old Trafford.
