Caldwell sustained a groin injury playing for his country against Norway just three days before the Premier League season got underway and has, as yet, failed to recover.

He would have been a certain starter at Stoke on the opening day but remained on the touchline because of the injury which has also kept him out of three more Premier League games and the Carling Cup tie at Hartlepool.

Owen Coyle said he hoped that his skipper would be able to resume training at some stage last week, but that was not the case although he could be ready to resume training at the beginning of next week.

Graham Alexander and Steven Fletcher are with the Scotland squad whilst Martin Paterson has joined up with Northern Ireland ahead of their qualifiers.
