Burnley dominate the best ever Irish team

It is a strong looking team and the first former Claret to be selected was Jimmy McIlroy in the midfield. Jimmy, who won 55 caps for his country, just had to be an automatic choice and he won convincingly to take his place alongside his old friend, the late Danny Blanchflower.

Surprisingly there was no place for Alex Elder at full back, maybe someone will explain to me just how on earth Mal Donaghy got in the side ahead of him, but we were far more fortunate when it came to selecting the forwards.

They were split into two groups and Billy Hamilton was selected from the first group and this week Willie Irvine has been revealed as his strike partner, Willie seeing off such as David Healy and Derek Dougan with some ease.

The final team was: Pat Jennings, Jimmy Nicholl, Gerry Taggart, Alan McDonald, Mal Donaghy, Keith Gillespie, Danny Blanchflower, Jimmy McIlroy, George Best, Billy Hamilton, Willie Irvine.
