Brighton lead the way with six points

Last updated : 17 August 2015 By Tony Scholes

I suppose it isn't too common an occurrence for that to be the case after just two games and I would warn Brighton not to get too carried away. The last club to sit proudly on top of the Championship as the only club with six points from two games was Blackpool two years ago. They ended the season in the bottom half and look where they are now, three years on from that start with wins against Millwall and Leeds, which, incidentally they followed up with a 6-0 win against Ipswich.

No less than eight clubs are just behind with a win and a draw and that includes Middlesbrough who are being tipped almost as promotion certainties. They signed David Nugent at the end of last week so that means we'll need to score at least twice to beat them now.

They also had the most comfortable win of the weekend, beating Bolton 3-0 with all the goals coming in the first half.

Middlesbrough are one of only two clubs not to have conceded a goal, Preston are the other, but poor Bolton are now the only club without a goal. To be fair they haven't had the easiest starts with them already having played Derby, another of the pre-season favourites.

They drew 0-0 against the Rams last week so that leaves them on one point, but for poor Bristol City and Rotherham, the search for a first point continues. Both have conceded six goals already but Steve Cotterill, who was in real whinge mode after the first game against Sheffield Wednesday, this week pointed to the red card given to Luke Freeman when they were beating Brentford 4-2.

It might not have been a good day for Cotterill but it was for three players who have previously played for us. Ross Wallace scored his first Sheffield Wednesday goal, Charlie Austin got his season off the mark for QPR and, much to my displeasure, Nathan Delfouneso scored with his first touch having come on for his Blackburn debut to get them a point at Huddersfield.

Twelve of the league, exactly half, remain unbeaten and we're one of them while thirteen are still looking for a first win, and we're on that list too.

I was asked on Saturday when we last drew our first two games and I got it correct. It was eleven years ago when a Micah Hyde goal earned us a point from a 1-1 draw against Sheffield United before we travelled to Millmoor and drew o-0 against Rotherham.

If we hadn't settled back in the Championship after relegation then that will alter this week when we have to contend with our first ridiculously long midweek trip to Ipswich.

All the results and stats from the weekend are below along with a list of the four players who have managed to find the net more than once. Then comes the red and yellow card count for each club and finally the midweek fixtures with Brentford v Birmingham having been called off because Brentford have decided to relay their pitch.
