Big night for the reserves - support them if you can

Bury have already been relegated and the second relegation place will be taken by either ourselves or Oldham Athletic with the Latics currently a point clear of ourselves.

We though have three games still to play, the first is tonight against Walsall at the Turf, whilst Oldham will complete their fixtures tonight with their one remaining game at home to Preston.

Preston will be fielding another young side although they have added Marlon Broomes to the squad and in our favour is the news that Preston reserve coach Billy Davies still has title aspirations and will be going all out for the win.

Oldham meanwhile will have Lee Duxbury, Danny Boshell, Wayne Gill and Carlo Corrazzin in their line up alongside Middlesbrough’s Andy Kelly currently on trial at Boundary Park.

But even if Oldham win it is all in our own hands and we would then need to win two of our three games against Walsall tonight, at Tranmere next Monday and then Bury at home two days later.

It is vital that we are not relegated, this league is not the best but our younger players do need to be playing against as strong an opposition as possible. Relegation would see us up against the likes of Rochdale, Doncaster, Macclesfield, the Unprofessionals of Stockport and Wrexham.

With no disrespect to these clubs we do need to be playing against better opposition and so we really do need to win two of these three games.

Clarets Mad were keen to help the reserves by having another ‘Roll up for the Reserves’ campaign. Last season’s was hugely successful and we attracted an attendance some seven times higher than the current poor gatherings.

But the club themselves have made it pretty clear that they are not bothered whether people turn up or not, they themselves make no real effort to promote reserve team games and that is a sad reflection indeed.

We though at Clarets Mad would like every Burnley fan who can make it to get down to the Turf tonight, yes I know that there is some football match on television, and get behind them it is a vital game.

Recent weeks have seen that our youth and reserve set up can certainly get as far as providing some potential for the first team with Matt O’Neill and Richard Chaplow both having played in a number of games now. Those of us who do go were at least able to see these players some time before they pulled on a first team shirt for the first time.

We do not want to play at a lower level of reserve team football, we cannot afford to be playing at a lower level of reserve team football.

If you can give them some support tonight then I am certain it will be very much appreciated.
