Benitez to take over Clarets

It is news that has stunned me but I was made aware in February, following another disappointing transfer window, that Burnley were looking to restructure with the appointing of a Sporting Director.

At the time, co-chairman John B told me: "We are bitterly disappointed that we couldn't get signings such as Graham Dorrans and Henri Lansbury completed and we are looking at appointing a Sporting Director before the next window to give us a better chance to operate in the transfer market."

That Sporting Director will not be Benitez but current manager Sean Dyche who will work alongside the Spaniard in a two man team provided Burnley can retain their place in the Premier League.

But it will be Benitez in charge of the team with the Clarets' hierarchy believing the club needs a higher profile manager to take the club further forward.

Dyche has accepted that he will take on a new role should he succeed in keeping us up this season and is looking forward to working with a manager who has won European competitions with both Liverpool and Chelsea, where he was interim manager last season.
