Barnes wins goal of the month - now for the best of the season

Last updated : 10 May 2014 By Tony Scholes

It won by some substantial margin, despite there being some other outstanding goals in the selection, but that's no surprise with the wonderful volleyed finish ending a move that included eight Burnley players starting with goalkeeper Tom Heaton and featuring some superb one touch football.

The goal set Burnley on the way in the promotion clinching 2-0 win against Wigan with Barnes winning 70.5% of the vote and I'm sure it would have been higher but for Michael Kightly's fantastic finish three days earlier in the 1-0 win at Blackpool that started our ecstatic Easter.

There was just 14.0% of the vote however for Kightly and he added only 5.0% with his next goal, the free kick finish from out on the left in that Wigan win.

The remaining goals were Danny Ings v Reading (4.0%), Scott Arfield v Watford (3.6%), Barnes v Barnsley (1.4%) and both Kightly v Ipswich and Arfield v Reading won just 0.7% of the vote.

It was the fifth time this season that the goal of the month had won in excess of 70% of the vote and all those goals, and the other monthly winners, are now included in the goal of the season vote which is underway from today.

The vote will run until the end of Tuesday, after which you will be able to vote for what you considered to be our best home performance of the season.

As always, you can vote via the front page of the site or the VOTING POLLS page.

You have nine choices.

1. August - Danny Ings

Our opener at Derby when Danny latched onto a flick from Keith Treacy in our own half and went on a superb solo run before beating Craig Forsyth on the edge of the box and then slotting the ball past former Claret Lee Grant.

2. September - Junior Stanislas

This goal had everything and nearly got us that much craved win against Blackburn that did come finally in March. Not only was it an outstanding finish from Stanislas but was the end of another great team move which culminated in Stanislas playing one-twos with first Kieran Trippier and then Ings before rifling the ball into the bottom corner from 25-yards.

3. October - Danny Ings

Ings scored both goals in the 2-0 win against QPR at home, the second of which was a penalty. The first was another special goal. Keith Treacy and Dean Marney did really well to win the ball back but then the Sam Vokes and Ings partnership took over with the exquisite reverse pass from Vokes to Ings setting up his strike partner who finished well.

4. November - Danny Ings

This goal came in one of our worst performances of the season at Huddersfield. We'd somehow kept the scores level in the first half but in a much improved second half found ourselves 2-0 down due to appalling decisions from the officials.

Ings pulled one back when he got onto a through ball from Vokes and, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, made no mistake.

5. December - Scott Arfield

The winning goal against Blackpool that ensured we were top at Christmas. Arfield received the ball from Ben Mee after he'd linked with David Jones on the left. Still in a wide position he curled the ball beyond the helpless Matt Gilks into the far corner.

6. January - Danny Ings

The opener in our first ever appearance at Yeovil's Huish Park. It may well have started with Yeovil's Luke Ayling giving the ball away but Ings needed no second invitation as he hammered a 25-yard beauty into the top corner.

7. February - Danny Ings

This was our third goal as we came from behind to beat Millwall 3-1. With the Clarets firmly on top, Trippier played a long pass down the middle for Ings. The first touch from Ings was sensational, his second touch saw him slip the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

8. March - David Jones

Jones scored just one league goal for the Clarets in his first season at Turf Moor, but what a goal against his former club Derby. Kightly got the better of a crawling Andre Wisdom before pulling the ball back for Ings. The striker chipped the ball up for Jones who took a touch off his thigh before placing his shot over Grant and in off the underside of the bar.

9. April/May - Ashley Barnes

This was the ultimate team goal on promotion day against Wigan. It started with Heaton and then involved Michael Duff, Arfield, Barnes, Jones, Kightly, Ings and then Marney who crossed for Barnes to volley home.
