Andy Madley has tonight's whistle

His performance that day will best be remembered for the downright ridiculous penalty he awarded against Jason Shackell with the Clarets leading 2-0. Quite how, from his position, he could award it, when it was clear from 100 yards away that Shackell had played the ball, was difficult to believe.

It was just his second Burnley game; the other had come in the previous season when we drew 1-1 against Plymouth in the Capital One Cup before going through on penalties.

That's one good game from him and at Derby, besides the penalty, he had a very disappointing game.

This is his fifth season as a Football League referee and, from the second half of last season, he is beginning to get more games at Championship level. This season he's refereed 16 games of which seven have been in our league.

He's already clocked up 55 yellow and three cards in those games with 14 of those yellow cards coming in the last two. Of those yellow cards, 26 have gone to home team players and 29 to away team players.

Two of the three red cards have come in Championship games. He sent off Bolton's Jay Spearing on the opening day of the season in a 0-0 home draw against Derby and just a week later he dismissed Preston's Jordan Hugill in a 1-0 win at MK; he'd only been on the pitch as a substitute for three minutes.

His most recent game was Middlesbrough's 3-0 home win against Charlton last Saturday. Middlesbrough's Carlos De Pena was yellow carded as were Charlton's El-Hadji Ba, Alou Diarra, Patrick Bauer, Chris Solley and Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Andy Madley is currently 50th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 53.33 out of 100. He got a rating of 78.67 for the Plymouth game but fell when he scored just 27.99 for his performance  at Derby.

The assistant referees are Anthony Backhouse (Cumbria) and Mark Dwyer (West Yorkshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Darren Bond (Lancashire) who is still to referee a Burnley game.
