We will fight forever more because of Boxing Day

Last updated : 26 December 2012 By Tony Scholes

On that day in 1979 we went into the game with three wins in the previous five games, our only three wins of the season, and the 3-2 win against the Geordies, with a first Burnley goal for Billy Hamilton and further goals from Malcolm Smith and a Martin Dobson penalty, lifted us off the bottom of the league for the first time all season.

Today we go into the game in search of a first win of the month. The last time we won was at Hull on 24th November with the last home win having been the 1-0 victory against Leeds earlier in that month.

Despite not having won in the last five games we've dropped just one place in the table and that means we go into today's game in fourteenth place but, if you can continue to show the sort of form we saw at Birmingham then the wins will start coming and we can look forward to a move up the table.

Ross Wallace looking for home wins

Back in October and November of last season Ross Wallace scored in four successive games. The last of those four was in a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City on 5th November and he hadn't scored again until he got our second at St. Andrew's on Saturday, beating Jack Butland with a sensational free kick.

Ahead of today's game, he said: "We are picking up points and we will start picking up wins if we play like that. And when we do win, these points we are picking up at the moment will be vital.

"Fans can tell when they are watching teams that they are struggling if they are not creating chances and under pressure a lot, but we pretty much dominated the game. They had spells for five minutes here and there with the big striker up front when they played the ball into him and we had to deal with that, but I think we looked more likely to open them up and score."

He added: "It's important we don't get disappointed and we have a couple of home games now which we are looking forward to. It's important we get the fans right behind us over the Christmas period and if we can pick up some decent wins at home hopefully that can kick us on up the table and we can look forward to next year."

It's very likely to be a similar Burnley team to the one that played at St. Andrew's. Danny Lafferty and Brian Stock were both ruled out of that one with injury with it reported that Sean Dyche will assess their fitness ahead of today's game.

It could be that the team remains the same as the one at Birmingham and if that's the case we will line up: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell, Joseph Mills, Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Ross Wallace, Danny Ings, Martin Paterson, Charlie Austin. Subs: Brian Jensen, David Edgar, Kevin Long, Marvin Bartley, Junior Stanislas, Keith Treacy, Sam Vokes.

Derby arrive for today's game in tenth place. They are three points ahead of us but they too come into the game on the back of a defeat. Their home game against Hull was played on Friday night and they lost it 2-1 with, according to manager Nigel Clough, Hull scoring with their only two attempts at goal.

They'd won their previous two games but it has been that sort of season for them, one of inconsistency where they've hovered around the mid table positions. When we won at Pride Park in they went down to 17th but they won the week after to go up to 12th and since have never been higher than 9th and never been lower than 15th.

The player to keep an eye on is definitely Will Hughes. The 17-year-old has been earning rave reviews recently and he certainly looked a big threat against us earlier in the season. Such is his potential that even at such a young age he's featured in all of Derby's games this season, starting all but one of them.

In terms of goals, Theo Robinson is their leading scorer with eight league goals. The former Watford and Millwall striker has scored twice for Derby against Burnley, in the games at Pride Park in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons.

With no injuries reported, Clough is expected to select from the same squad that played against Hull although he could give Mark O'Brien a starting place at the expense of James O'Connor, who is not the former Claret despite those listening to radio commentary being told so when we met earlier in the season.

Derby's team against Hull was: 13. Adam Legzdins, 2. John Brayford, 6. Richard Keogh, 16. James O'Connor, 3. Gareth Roberts, 7. Paul Coutts, 8. Jeff Hendrick, 4. Craig Bryson, 19. Will Hughes, 12. Michael Jacobs, 32. Conor Sammon. Subs. 1. Frank Fielding, 15. Mark O'Brien, 21. Valentin Gjokaj, 23. Kieron Freeman, 18. Ben Davies, 9. Nathan Tyson, 11. Theo Robinson.

Last Time They Were Here

Our home game last season against Derby was played in January and came at a time when we were very much in our best form of the season. In the previous game we'd won 2-0 at Middlesbrough which was the outstanding away performance of last season.

The day before the game, Nigel Clough confirmed his team's main intention was to keep a clean sheet, and on a day of high winds he played with that as a sole intention rather than just the main one. He came for a 0-0 draw and went home with one, the only Turf Moor goalless draw under Eddie Howe's management.

Debut for Josh McQuoid

We had to make changes for the game. Both Martin Paterson and Junior Stanislas had suffered hamstring injuries at Middlesbrough. That meant recalls for Charlie Austin and Keith Treacy whilst new signing Josh McQuoid, who had arrived that week on loan from Millwall, was named as one of the five substitutes.

In the opening minutes, both recalled players came close to scoring. Austin saw a shot blocked by Paul Green and Treacy's header went just over the bar. If only one of those efforts had gone in, this would have been a very different game.

Probably the main highlight of the game was suffering the constant time wasting from goalkeeper Frank Fielding as Derby went worse and worse.

McQuoid was introduced for the second half and he was involved in our best two moments after the break. The only other occasion we really threatened was when Jay Rodriguez saw a shot blocked after McQuoid had played the ball in.

For the second season in succession Derby had come to spoil. In 2010/11 we were able to hit them with two late goals but this time they got exactly what they wanted - that 0-0 draw.

The teams were;

Burnley: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, David Edgar, Ben Mee, Ross Wallace (Josh McQuoid), Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Keith Treacy (Marvin Bartley 72), Charlie Austin, Jay Rodriguez. Subs not used: Brian Jensen, Brian Easton, Zavon Hines.

Derby: Frank Fielding, John Brayford, Shaun Barker, Jason Shackell, Gareth Roberts, Paul Green, James Bailey (Jeff Hendrick 45), Craig Bryson, Jamie Ward, Callum Ball (Jake Buxton 84), Theo Robinson (Ryan Noble 57). Subs not used: Adam Legzdins, Ben Davies.
