Brewers back again for cup tie

Last updated : 09 August 2011 By Tony Scholes

Last season's game marked Eddie Howe's first home game in charge of the Clarets and came after we'd beaten Port Vale in the previous round with Stuart Gray in charge.

Charlie Austin is expected to start

Tonight's game represents the start of Howe's first cup campaign for Burnley and he's looking for his first ever win in this competition as a manager although he did have some success as a player.

As boss of Bournemouth he suffered a 4-0 first round defeat at Millwall two years ago and last year saw his side go down 2-0 at Southampton.

However, as a player, he certainly had one notable win. In September 2004 he lined up for Bournemouth alongside Wade Elliott, Garreth O'Connor and John Spicer at Blackburn. The game ended 3-3 after extra time, with both O'Connor and Spicer on the scoresheet.

It went to penalties and Bournemouth won 7-6. That trio of future Clarets all scored from the spot but when Tugay missed it was left to Howe to step up and hammer home the winning penalty.

But back to tonight's game and Howe will need to find a replacement for Martin Paterson who has again been ruled out. Pato was never going to play in this game as, if fit, would have been on duty with Northern Ireland.

He would have been one of three players away. Keith Treacy, who had such an impact as a substitute on Saturday, is with the Republic of Ireland, whilst Alex MacDonald would surely have been involved tonight had he not been away with Scotland under-21s.

Almost certainly Charlie Austin, Saturday's half time replacement for Paterson, will start. Austin scored his first Burnley goal on Saturday and he'll be hungry for more as he looks to stake a claim for a regular place after coming back from injury himself.

Howe has suggested there will be minimal changes for a game he really wants to win and this could be the only change.

If so the team will be: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, Andre Amougou, Ben Mee, Danny Fox, Wade Elliott, Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Ross Wallace, Charlie Austin, Jay Rodriguez. Subs from: Brian Jensen, David Edgar, Michael Duff, Brian Easton, Marvin Bartley, Wes Fletcher, Alex-Ray Harvey, Steven Hewitt, Dominic Knowles.

Our Opponents

Like Burnley, Burton Albion got the season underway with a 2-2 draw, theirs coming at Torquay. There was also a similar pattern in that the away team were 2-0 up before the home team came back to equalise.

Justin Richards, who also played in the FA Cup against us last season for Port Vale, signed last week from  Vale. He got both goals for Burton early in the second half, but the home side hit back almost immediately to reduce the arrears before grabbing an equaliser nine minutes from time.

Tagged onto the end of last season it is a fourth successive draw for the Brewers and they've now gone seven games without defeat since a 1-0 defeat at Bury in April. That run at the end of last season ensured they wouldn't drop back out of the Football League and in the end they finished four points clear in 19th place.

Tom Parkes, on loan from Leicester, was sent off at Torquay and so will miss the tie, but as he goes out they welcome back Jacques Maghoma who returns after completing a suspension held over from last season and he should come straight back in.

Peschisolido said: "I have to make one change because Tom Parkes is suspended and there's a very good chance that Jacques will play. I'll give some thought to other possible changes, but uppermost in my mind is to take the opportunity to build on what I thought was a good performance at Torquay".

Tony James could get a recall as he comes back from a groin strain and Burton could line up: Ross Atkins, Andrew Corbett, Tony James, Nathan Stanton, Aaron Webster, Cleveland Taylor, Adam Bolder, John McGrath, Jacques Maghoma, Calvin Zola, Justin Richards. Subs: Kevin Poole, Chris Palmer, Adi Yussuf, Ryan Austin, Jimmy Phillips, Greg Pearson, Danny Blanchett.

Last Time They Were Here

FA Cup 4th round day 2011 and a higher than expected crowd of over 11,600 were at Turf Moor to welcome new manager Eddie Howe and his team.

Since they'd taken over we'd drawn at Scunthorpe and beaten Portsmouth at Fratton Park but this was the first time the new boss was in the Turf Moor dug out.

Burton arrived looking for an upset but in truth Burnley's 3-1 win was a comfortable one in which Chris Eagles scored twice and Martin Paterson added a late third on his latest comeback from injury.

Howe, as he has done today, promised a strong team, and it was the same eleven that had won at Portsmouth.

Two goals for Chris Eagles

Burnley were, without doubt, the better side, but they had to contend with a very physical Burton side and it was amazing that they escaped even a solitary yellow card during the opening part of the game. When a yellow card did come it went our way with Clarke Carlisle finding his way into the notebook.

It seemed as if we just needed a goal and it came just before the half hour from Eagles. He did well and played a 1-2 with Jack Cork whose back heel return was stroked into the bottom corner.

It was a day for new faces and after the manager it was the turn of new signing Charlie Austin at half time to take the applause from the Burnley fans after completing his move from Swindon.

Ross Wallace came on just past the hour and made a real impact although his part in the second goal followed a farcical give away from Burton. Goalkeeper Adam Legzdin's clearance hit Darren Moore on the back and dropped for Cork who fed Wallace.

The keeper and Eagles both went for his cross but it went beyond them to Chris Iwelumo who turned it back for Eagles to get his second.

That should have been game over and Eagles, by now, was running the show. But with just under ten minutes remaining Calvin Zola got in to reduce the arrears via the underside of the bar. That led to a few nervy moments and Burton put us under some pressure.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Legzdin could only parry a Wallace free kick and there was Paterson to turn it in from close range to ensure Burnley went through to round five.

The teams were;

Burnley: Lee Grant, Tyrone Mears, Clarke Carlisle, Michael Duff, Danny Fox, Jack Cork, Dean Marney, Chris Eagles, Wade Elliott (Martin Paterson 73), Steven Thompson (Chris Iwelumo 61), Jay Rodriguez (Ross Wallace 62). Subs not used: Brian Jensen, David Edgar, Andre Bikey, Graham Alexander.

Burton: Adam Legzdin, Andrew Corbett (Ryan Austin 88), Nathan Stanton, Darren Moore, Scott Malone, Adam Bolder, John McGrath (Greg Pearson 65), Russell Penn, Aaron Webster (Lewis Young 64), Jacques Maghoma, Calvin Zola. Subs not used: Kevin Poole, Paul Boertien, Tony James, Jimmy Phillips.
