We passed the ball about and took control of the game

Despite going down to a 3-0 defeat against the Clarets, Knill was happy with what he saw from his Bury players and his group of trialists. He said: "It was a good workout for both teams.

"I thought the first half was pretty competitive but then, after, the game died a little bit. We had some trialists we wanted to have a look at, so it is kind of false, but overall it was a good workout."

Brian Laws was happy enough with the first pre-season game. "It was never going to be about today and I warned the players they would be a little rusty," said the Burnley boss.

"The important thing is fitness, but we passed the ball about and took control of the game and looked comfortable.

"The other element though is gaining a winning mentality and doing all the positive things and I am particularly happy with the contributions and effort that everyone gave."

Ross Wallace was the only one of the three new signings to play in the first half. Laws said of him: "Ross looks like he is going to be a real shining light for us because he has got great ability. He scored a great goal and we are hoping for great things.

"I think Burnley fans have been used to having a flair player and he is a player who can create something out of nothing. I'm hoping his delivery will be very influential in the games to come because the strikers will thrive on that."
