We are pleased with our return of 7 points out of 9

Sturrock had seen his side collect one point from the first two games with them failing to find the net in either, but following our visit to Hillsborough he felt they had deserved more from their first week of the season.

“We've played three games with a depleted squad and we've been competent in all three,” he said after the game, adding: “We just cannot put the damn thing in the net at this moment in time.

“We've hit the bar twice and had half chances flashing across the goals. It just shows what a clinical striker can do for a football club. Hopefully our strike force will come back sooner rather than later.”

He ended by saying: “I'm gutted, frustrated and disappointed – that's how I feel.”

Steve Cotterill felt the result was a just one and felt that the Clarets should have had a penalty themselves in the first half. “It was a hard fought game but I thought a draw was a fair result,” he said. “Wednesday hit the bar twice, but they were speculative efforts rather than coming from any sustained pressure.

“I thought we should have had a penalty in the first half for a push on Andy Gray, I'm absolutely sure about that one and it was the first thing Andy said when he came in at half time. We have no qualms with their penalty, Jon Harley got squared up and it left him in trouble.”

Burnley ended the game with ten men following the late dismissal of Gray and on that Steve added: “I don't have any problem with the sending off. Andy said he hadn't heard the whistle and I believe him because there were 20,000 people out there. I looked him in the eye and he is gutted, but he still kicked the ball away and the technicalities now say that the referee had to send him off.”

Asked about whether it was a good point or not he said: “I would much rather look at the three games as a whole. We haven't played as well as we did against either QPR or Leicester, but you are not going to do that for all the games.

“At the end of the day we are pleased with our return of seven points out of nine, we now have a clear week to get down to some hard training ahead of the home game against Wolves.”
