There is nothing you can do when a bug like that flies around

QPR boss Neil Warnock is, of course, renowned for his words on referees, and I have to agree with him that Williamson had a very poor game. I can't though understand how the former Sheffield United boss can honestly believe his side created chances let alone miss them.

"It's very frustrating at the minute," Warnock said after seeing his side lose top place in the league. "I thought that was the best we've done in a long time though and we created plenty of chances to win the game.

"They only forced Paddy [Kenny] in to one great save apart from the penalty, so I was pleased with that.

"They got the rub of the green at the right time, because it was never a penalty . I don't know how he can give it because there were four bodies between him and the offence, so he's guessing again. He had a bad day at the office today.

"We can't blame the referee for missing the chances though, can we? Somehow we managed to miss them and it's disappointing. It's down to us to take our chances."

The Burnley fans in the School End at Loftus Road had no idea of the drama ahead of the game with players going down ill but Brian Laws explained. "We had six players violently sick on Wednesday and Thursday and it wiped them out," he confirmed.

"There is nothing you can do when a bug like that flies around. It wasn't one after the other, it was all six at one time and that's why this was an amazing performance because the work they put in on an empty tank, you have to give the lads great credit.

"Some of those players started today and that's why I am so pleased. I was hoping not to use it as an excuse, but I had to make decisions on the team because I even had players on the bench who might have got in the team, but were worse.

"They have earned a day off now and thankfully we can isolate them now and hopefully ensure nobody else falls ill because we have a massive week ahead of us."

Speaking about the game, Laws said: "That is as tough a game as they have had this year. I thought we had the better chances and the referee might have to take responsibility. I could question whether the game was too big for him because there were some horrendous decisions.

"In the end I have had to make a decision because of his decisions. I had to take Chris Eagles off because I think if I hadn't he would probably have sent him off. That can't be right because Chris is one of the least dirty players you could wish for. Chris Eagles is an honest lad with a big a fat lip to show for it."

Explaining the decision to bring in Lee Grant, he said: "Let me tell you it was a tough, tough decision, probably the toughest I have had to make this season. But I don't mind that. I just wanted to freshen things up.

"Brian has been in great form himself and he will rightly feel hard done by, but I thought Lee's performance on Wednesday merited a little extension and it just shows that I have two great keepers.

"Both wanted to play, but hopefully the result has vindicated the decision."
