One disappointment is that we didn't scored five goals

We haven't suffered defeat at Layer Road since the 1986/87 season and there was little likelihood of us losing this one once we'd gone in front. Colchester boss Geraint Williams admitted that as he spoke after the game.

"All defeats are disappointing, but the nature of this one was very disappointing," he said after seeing his side lose for the first time this season. "We were a bit naive in our defending and it has cost us. We stepped off Burnley a bit, but we need to give them credit because they were worth their lead at half-time."

Steve Cotterill was the manager with a smile on his face at the end, pleased with both the performance and the result. "I thought we played very well today and I actually think 3-2 probably flattered them a bit," he said after the game. "It was a game we deserved to win and the only disappointing thing is that we didn't keep a clean sheet. The other slight disappointment is that we didn't scored five goals, which we deserved.

"That gives us a good boost going into the two week break now. That's unfortunate because we could have done without it, but to be in the top half of the table on six points and with a game in hand is okay."

Speaking about his decision to play new signing Graham Alexander in the midfield he added: "Graham gave me exactly what I expected. He has played in there before and I wouldn't have put him in there if I thought it was going to be something he couldn't deal with.

"He can, and I thought he was first class. He was a steadying influence, doing the simple things well and we just have to get him a bit fitter now so that he doesn't come off with cramp again. He's getting a little bit of stick for coming off for that.

"However he had a young man alongside him in Chris McCann, who I thought was outstanding. Having people run forward into the box is always dangerous and we were pleased Chris managed to do that today, especially for the penalty."
