He threatened Jonah that he would fill him

Carey saw his side beaten 5-2 and admitted that the Clarets had taught his side a thing or two. "It was a really good lesson for us and we found out an awful lot tonight, and too many things to be specific about right now," he said after the game.

"What we did say afterwards was that the manner in which you start games is really, really important. You need to set yourself up for a game but we really didn't do that tonight. It was a great workout fitness wise, but we probably did too much when we didn't have the ball and not enough when we did have it, but it was a good game and a good workout for us.

"We allowed them to pass the ball, but they are a Championship side and that was a real lesson for us. Burnley took the game to us early on and gave us problems with the way they passed the ball and we need to be doing that. If you allow good players room to do what they want then they can cause you problems.

"We've got to be realistic about it and realise what we are doing and where we are going. It was pleasing to get back level, we had a go and responded and did what we are good at and that lasted for about 25 minute or so, and we showed in that period what we are all about.

"We made mistakes defensively at times, we switched off at crucial moments, what with the penalties we conceded. I would say that there are things which are easily solved. The players have probably gone home tonight fed up and that's not a bad thing."

The think that pleased Steve Cotterill most was seeing two more of his strikers get off the mark with their first goals. "It was Robbie's goal on Saturday and we put those first two down as Andy's tonight, as well as one from Ade. So we only need Kyle to nick a goal and the strikers are all up and running and we'll be pleased when that happens."

Lafferty was stretchered off during the first half but Cotterill confirmed it was nothing serious. "Kyle's alright, it is only a knock and not a twist which we are delighted about. Hopefully he won't be out for too long with that.

"Pre-season is all about fitness. I said it the other day when we got the injury to Chris McCann and I will say it again, it is all about trying to get through games without injuries. Now we've gone and picked another one up, so maybe I should stop saying it."

The manager also had words of praise for youngster Jay Rodriguez who stepped up to take the late penalty just minutes after coming on for his first ream debut. "Jay Rodriguez is a confident boy," Steve said. "He threatened Jonah that he would fill him in if he didn't give him the ball for the penalty. I'm delighted with that, it was a great bit of confidence by the lad.

"It is good because he is only a kid and has just come in. We don't quite know where he will go, or what he will do because we haven't seen enough of him yet. He's probably got a bit more growth in him, but to be fair to him he's got courage. We saw that by him picking the ball up and I liked it, to take the ball of a senior pro. To stick it away like he did was even better."
