Attack wise, we didn't do as well as I would have hoped

Both sides are being tipped to be right up there this season, but it was Burnley who came out on top. However, Davies couldn't hide his delight at the way his side had played.

"We are all disappointed not to have won but the great reaction of the Forest fans showed what they felt about the performance and I thank them for that," Davies said after his side had gone down to a goal right on half time form Chris Iwelumo.

"It was a very positive performance, there is no doubt we had some great opportunities. I have played poorer than that and picked up three points. In the first half our possession was not as good as it should have been, but in the second half we showed a lot of good quality and created opportunities in front of goal.

"Considering that Ryan Bertrand has only just walked into the team and several of the players had not trained recently because of injuries, I am absolutely delighted. "

Burnley boss Brian Laws was certainly delighted with the result and was pleased that his decision to play Iwelumo paid off with the winning goal. "I'm delighted for Chris," he said. "He is a gentle giant and a nice guy who is a winner, and he's come here to do that.

"He is going to be a very strong contender for us because if you put the ball in the box in the right areas he will get on the end of it. The headaches for me will always come when I have to leave players out and today was very hard on the likes of Steven Thompson who has had a good pre-season.

"I just felt this game was more suited to Chris and thankfully he has rewarded me with a win. Steven feels a bit dejected because he thought he might get the edge. Players are understandably not going to be happy when they are not in the side, but it's a long season and everybody will play their part."

Speaking about the game, he said: "As a team I thought we defended very well and I can't recall Brian Jensen making a save, so that tells you we did well in that respect. Attack wise, we didn't do as well as I would have hoped, but that will come.

"We will do better with the ball, but this will give everyone confidence going into the next games. Against a very good side we have ground out a win and you can't ask for more than a first clean sheet in a while.

"If we finish in and around Nottingham Forest, either above or below them, we will be real contenders, so it was always going to be a tight game and thankfully we got it.

"It's very early in the season and nobody is going to suggest all is rosy. There is still a lot of work to be done and the pitch didn't help. There were probably a few injuries out there on the Forest side that the pitch might have contributed to, so I hope they are ok.

"I was a bit annoyed with the fact it isn't finished yet. The middle third is finished, but the outside is not, so it's very soft, but hopefully the contractors will finish it by the time we start our next game.

"It wasn't all about the pitch though and the good thing is we gain huge belief."
