All in all it was a decent pre-season game for us

Big Sam had spoken during the week about the need to bring in a quality striker. The manager who is very much into ProZone and stats had said that a quality side will score from around one chance in five, but last season Bolton's scoring rate was only one goal per eight or nine chances created.

He was making the same argument again after the Clarets won the game and said: “Johann Smith had two glorious chances to score and sadly missed both of them. It is very much or Achilles heel throughout the club; we are creating chances time after time but we only managed to score one goal again. It shows that our problem hasn't gone away.

“At this moment in time we have to make sure that we share our goals out all over the pitch otherwise it is going to be a bit of a struggle to continue on into the Premiership next season and be as successful as we have been.

“I'm still saving my money and waiting for the right person to come along. Hopefully in the next week or two I can spend it and, after today, it needs to be a goalscorer.”

Meanwhile Steve Cotterill was pleased with his side's performance and the fact that we were somewhat sharper in front of goal than our Premiership opponents, and he was appreciative that they had come to Burnley to play us.

Steve, who received a superb reception from the crowd before the game, said: “We are thankful that Bolton have come over and we enjoyed the game very much. Make no bones about it, they are a decent team.

“Whenever you play a team from the Premiership, you always know it is going to be a tough game and sometimes you get caught chasing, but that can only help the fitness levels which I was pleased with.

“Some of the players are further down the line than others, and it was certainly a better defensive display in the second half than it was in the first half, but all in all it was a decent pre-season game for us.”

Speaking about the goals, the manager added: “I thought our first goal was excellent. We hadn't strung four passes together before then, but then it was neat and incisive, so that pleased me very much. I'm not happy at all with the goal we conceded, but the ones we scored were excellent.

“I don't think pre-season results mean anything though. It is performances we are looking for more than results because they will ultimately bring us results when the season starts.”
